Max Marcus is a consultant solicitor at Hogans.
"I stopped counting the years of my qualification as a solicitor after the first quarter of a century. When I think back to the earlier days of articled clerkship and expectation I recall a period of post Edwardian manners with fountain pens and permanent black ink or, for the adventurous, washable blue. Secretaries took one to one personal dictation and barristers felt awkward without their wigs. The pace was slower. |
I also remember the county court in Liverpool being in India Buildings and then it moving to the QEII before then moving to Vernon Street. I shall await its next move before retiring.
I have worked on a kibbutz in Israel. I have worked in a solicitor's office in both Speke and Garston and have been a lecturer of law and a trainee manager of an insurance company. I have been a salaried partner in two firms, equity partner in one in Liverpool city centre and am a consultant currently. The best is last.
As a solicitor I have dealt with general practice such as criminal cases, debt, divorce, injunctions, probate, wills, partnership and company law, mercantile law (Garston has its own docks of course), personal injuries, conveyancing, albeit briefly, rent and mortgage possessions. I did one mental health review tribunal hearing as well! I have also dealt with clinical negligence which I enjoyed and which gave me my 15 minutes of fame insofar as I was in all the national newspapers, on Look North West and Granada Reports having represented 15 Merseyside women who were suing the health authority for cervical smear tests that had gone awry. That was in 1988.
The family law work started to dominate in the latter years and I have dealt with international kidnapping cases and large ancillary relief cases. My abiding interest lies with child care law. I have been a member of the children panel since 1988. I am a Higher Court Advocate (Civil)".
