What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files which are placed on your device by websites that you visit.  They are extremely common and do lots of different and useful jobs such as remembering your preferences for that website, making websites work more efficiently and they also provide information to the owners of the website.

There are different types of cookies which all work the same way but have a few small differences.

First Party Cookies

These are cookies that are sent to your device by (or on behalf of) the website you’re visiting.

Third Party Cookies

These are cookies which, as the name suggests, are sent by a third party that are in some way connected to our website.  For example, if we put a video via YouTube onto our website, they may place cookies onto your device to remember your preferences.

Session Cookies

Session cookies are ones which are typically removed once you close your browser.  They only remember things while you still have the browser open.

Persistent Cookies

These are cookies which usually stay on your device even after you’ve closed your browser.  They often help to improve your experience when revisiting a website at a later date.

Essential & Non-essential

Essential cookies are those which are necessary for you to use the website and its features properly.

Non essential cookies are for things like Google Analytics which won’t affect the performance of the website.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics which is a service provided by Google to collect information about how visitors use our website.  We use this information to compile reports and help us improve our website.  Google Analytics cookies collect information in an anonymous form such as the number of visitors to the site, where they came from and what pages they visited within our website.

How to manage and control cookies

UK and EU websites don’t have to request visitors’ permission for the essential cookies that are needed for a website to work but they do have to request permission for all others.

You will usually see some sort of banner or widget icon appear when you visit a website asking you to confirm you are happy for cookies to be used.

You can set your browser to automatically deal with certain types of cookies by following the instructions applicable to that particular browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox.)

We have included two useful links below which explain cookies in a bit more detail and show you how to disable or restrict cookies.
